How To Choose A Dosatron System

Learning how to choose a Dosatron system can seem like a daunting task. Dosatron is widely considered to be the premier brand when it comes to automatic nutrient delivery in commercial applications.
Whether you are new to the world of auto dosing and fertigation, a seasoned vet, or somewhere in between, choosing the correct, complete Dosatron System could seem like a daunting task. You may be asking yourself “How do I choose the right Dosatron?”
What Dosatron System do I need?
The answer is relatively simple, requiring only a little math and basic knowledge of the chemicals you’ll be injecting.
To answer this question, we can break it down into relatively simple steps. First, you will need to do some math based on the total flow rate you require in Gallons Per Minute. Second, you should have a good understanding of the chemicals or solutions you’ll be injecting.
Determining The Dosatron Systems Total Flow Rate
Let’s take an example of an irrigation system in a greenhouse. The system has a total of 2,000 emitters rated at .5 gallons per hour. One thing to note is most emitters, drippers, sprayers, drip stakes, etc., show their flow rate in Gallons Per Hour or GPH. You will have to divide by 60 to convert to GPM.
2,000 emitters x .5 GPH / 60 = 16.6 Gallons Per Minute GPM)
The Dosatron Units Specification Chart below details the exact specs for each unit including max flow, flow range, pressure, rations, and connection types.
The correct injector for this example application would be one of the D45RE Series with a flow of 20 GPM. This flow rate would supply enough water volume to allow every emitter to operate at full capacity.
In many cases, the system contains zones with only part of the total emitters. Using our earlier example, we have two zones of 1,000 emitters each. Activating only 1,000 emitters at a time changes the flow rate to 8.3 GPM.
1,000 x .5 = 500/ 60 = 8.3 Gallons Per Minute GPM)
Again, referring to the Dosatron Units Specification Chart, we see several units in this range; D25 and D14.
You will notice that each series has several different model designations. These multiple-part numbers indicate units with different housing materials and internal components to resist wear from various chemicals. Also, most series have models with fixed or adjustable ratios.
Determining The Required Injection Ratio
The injection ratio determines how much of the concentrate solution is mixed with water. Dosatron units come with various ratio options (e.g., 1:100, 1:50, 1:20). You will need to find out the ratio of nutrients in the water that you require for your specific operation.
Example:
- 1:100 ratio means 1 part of the concentrate is mixed with 100 parts of water.
- 1:500 ratio means 1 part of the concentrate is mixed with 500 parts of water.
- 1:3000 ratio means 1 part of the concentrate is mixed with 3000 parts of water.
Determine Chemical Compatibility
Dosatron injectors come with certain types of seals based on your needs. You should have a good understanding of the specific chemicals and pH levels that you are using so you can choose the correct seal for your injector.
Some units are designed to handle corrosive chemicals, while others are better suited for standard fertilizers or medications. Listed below are the 3 types of seals Dosatron units can use.
- Viton Seals: Generally used for products with neutral to acidic pH. Ex: fertilizers, pesticides, acids (pH correction), supplements, surfactants.
- Aflas Seals: Generally used for products with a higher than neutral to alkaline pH. Ex: pH up products, calcium hydroxide (liquid lime), calcium carbonate, potassium carbonate.
- Kalrez Seals: Used specifically for Peracetic acid (also known as peroxyacetic acid, or PAA) products. Ex: ZeroTol, SaniDate, etc.
